What is a Karaoke Subwoofer?

Karaoke subwoofer (also known as subwoofer) is a specialized audio device to reproduce low frequencies, usually below 100Hz. In karaoke systems, subwoofers play an important role in creating strong bass, helping the overall sound become fuller and more vivid. Based on the structure and operating principle, karaoke subwoofers are divided into two main types:
  • Electric subwoofer: Built-in amplifier, easy to use and popular in home karaoke systems.
  • Subwoofer: Need to add a power amplifier, usually with high capacity, suitable for business karaoke rooms or large spaces.
Adding a subwoofer helps the singer feel the depth of the music, especially songs with lots of drums, bass or EDM, remix music.

Why Does Karaoke System Need a Subwoofer?

Conventional karaoke systems only use full-range speakers or bookshelf speakers, which are limited to the mid and high ranges, causing the bass to lack power or become distorted. Karaoke subwoofers will completely overcome this:
  • Enhanced bass range: Low frequency response from 20Hz – 100Hz, for full sound.
  • Create a sense of living space: Subwoofer creates sound pressure, giving the feeling of being in a professional studio or stage.
  • Main speaker protection: By separating the bass for the subwoofer to handle, the full-range speaker will operate more effectively, reducing the risk of damage.
Especially for remix music, newly arranged bolero, EDM or bass-heavy yellow music - having an additional subwoofer is almost mandatory if you want to experience the right "quality".

Popular Karaoke Subwoofer Lines on the Market

1. Active subwoofer:
  • Built-in amplifier
  • Plug directly from mixer or amplifier
  • Easy to adjust volume, crossover and phase
  • Examples: JBL Stage A120P, CAVS TLS 12, E3 SUB 2000, Paramax SUB-2000
2. Passive subwoofer:
  • No built-in amplifier
  • Need to be paired with a suitable power main
  • For strong, powerful and powerful bass
  • Examples: BFaudio ZR12, JBL KP6018S, Nexo L18, Wharfedale Delta 18B

How to Choose a Karaoke Subwoofer Suitable for Your Space

1. By room area:

Room size Recommended subwoofer RMS power (estimated)
Under 15m² 8" or 10" subwoofer 100W - 200W
15m² – 25m² 10" or 12" subwoofer 200W - 300W
Over 25m² Subwoofer 15" or larger 300W – 500W+
2. According to karaoke system configuration:
  • If using 3 in 1 amplifier: Choose a sub-electric for easy pairing.
  • If the system already has its own main + mixer: Subwoofer can be selected for high performance.
3. According to music taste:
  • Golden music, bolero: Choose speakers with deep, soft bass, down to 35Hz.
  • Remix music, EDM, dance: Choose a sub with high sensitivity, fast and strong hitting force.

Instructions for Installing Karaoke Subwoofers Correctly

1. Speaker placement:
  • Place near the center or corner of the wall to take advantage of the resonance effect.
  • Do not place too close to the wall (should be 20-30cm away) to avoid noise.
  • Avoid placing the sub too far from the listener or too close to sources of vibration.
2. Standard connection:
  • Subwoofer: Connect from mixer or amplifier to sub out port (RCA, XLR depending on type).
  • Sub steam: Connect from power amplifier, note the appropriate impedance and power.
3. Parameter alignment:
  • Crossovers: set around 80 - 120Hz depending on full speaker.
  • Phase: Try changing the phase to 0° or 180° for the clearest bass.
  • Gain: Adjust moderately, not too loud to cause buzzing or overwhelm the midrange.
