Howling speakers are always an extremely annoying sound, and can interrupt your music party. Not only that, prolonged howling speakers can also lead to serious damage to the speakers and electrical short circuits. So why do speakers howl? What are the causes and how to fix howling speakers?
Causes of howling sound system and speakers
There are many reasons for howling speakers. Mainly due to improper use and maintenance of speakers. Let's find out with Nova Vietnam.
Position the microphone straight ahead and close to the speaker.
For those of you who often sing karaoke, you will realize that when you place your microphone close to the speaker, the speaker will howl. The problem is that the microphone picks up the sound from your voice and emits it to the speaker. At that time, your microphone will also absorb the sound emitted by the speaker and amplify it exponentially. The cycle repeats itself, causing the speaker to howl.
Speaker vent is blocked
On any microphone, there will be a vent hole designed. Placed behind the membrane. During use, the vent hole will sometimes be blocked, causing the microphone to not be able to escape, causing a howling sound on the microphone. The speaker will emit sound from the microphone, from which the speaker will howl.
Sound resonance appears
This cause mainly appears in closed karaoke rooms. The arrangement in the room is not airy and reasonable. Or the speaker capacity is not suitable for the area of the room. This leads to the phenomenon of sound resonance when the speaker emits sound that will be reflected by objects in the room and the microphone will collect those noises, emit them to the speaker again. It goes around and around and the howling sound appears.
Adjust the sound, the speaker is howling
Improper adjustment of amplifier and digital echo causes howling sound.
Amplifiers or audio amplifiers in general are also one of the causes of howling speakers. Mainly because the amplifier is not operating at full capacity or is operating at too much capacity.
While playing music, if you adjust the amplifier and digital echo incorrectly, your microphone will howl and emit noise through the speaker.
How to fix howling sound system and speakers
Above are some of the causes of speaker howling. However, the solution is also very simple. With the immediate measures below.
– Change the direction of the speakers and the stage. If you place the speakers behind you, the possibility of howling is very high. Therefore, if possible, move the speakers to positions in front of you.
– The simplest way is to turn the microphone away from the direct sound of the speaker, to avoid the microphone picking up sounds from the speaker. The howling will be immediately stopped but not completely.
– If the cause of the microphone howling is due to a closed room, you should buy concave-convex sound-absorbing foam (egg foam) commonly found in recording studios and stick it to the corners of the wall. With just this simple method, the sound will be absorbed to avoid echoing and causing howling.
– Or you can reduce the Treble (HI) and MID levels, then the mic will no longer howl. However, this will also cause some of the good sounds of the vocals to be lost.
